MYTHBUSTERS: Today we talk to our clinician Ann-Marie about the common myths surrounding exfoliating the skin on your face.

1. Product / Treatment

Face Scrubs / Exfoliation

2. What is the myth?

Myth 1: Frequent exfoliation will get rid of more dead skin cells
Myth 2: To have an effective face scrub/exfoliation that the product must be granular (Spheres, Beads or Grains).

3. Why you think the myth is out there?

I believe that this myth was created because this was a ‘traditional’ way of exfoliating the skin. With new technology this has now evolved with further science and research on how the skin is affected when exfoliated & the use of more advanced ingredients. It is now about educating our patients, men & women, that there are now other alternatives products that are more gentle on the skin with the same or better result! (Even for sensitive skin)

4. The truth about exfoliation

Over-exfoliating strips the skin of natural oils thereby causing irritation and inflammation. On top of this, if you overstrip your skin, this scan cause excess oil production, which in turn triggers breakouts. Other consequences can be oversensitivity, redness, bumps and even peeling.

As far as using ‘granular’ exfoliants, with new technology and research, we now can offer our patients non-granular & non-abrasive exfoliation for the skin. This includes the use of ingredients such as AHA’S ( Alpha Hydroxy Acids) such as: Lactic Acid (Sour Milk), Glycolic Acid (Sugar Cane), Citric Acid (Citrus Fruits), Malic Acid (Apples).

Cosmedix Pure Enzymes Exfoliating Mask 30ml – $70

My personal favourite exfoliant within the Sydney Skin Fit Store is the Cosmedix Pure Enzymes Exfoliating Mask, which uses Lactic Acid & Cranberry Enzymes tenderly scrub away facial impurities and decongest blocked pores, which will minimise the appearance pores.

With a new and improved formula, active ingredients exfoliate, protect and revitalise the skin, potent, oil-free moisturisers add a dewy softness to blemish-prone skin.

It smells amazing too! Apply this product to clean skin once- twice per week, leave on for 3-10mins and rinse off.
