Ever heard of Radio Frequency Needling?

If your skin is starting to sag and wrinkle, or you have acne scarring or large pores, Radio Frequency Needling (RF Needling) may be the perfect treatment for you!

What exactly is RF Needling?

RF Needling is a non-invasive treatment to assist with textured scarring, pore refinement and skin rejuvenation. It uses a combination of radio frequency and percutaneous needling to induce collagen production and tighten elastin fibres.

Ultrafine micro needles to deliver radio frequency energy directly into various depths in the skin, causing a controlled wound healing response. This creates a chain reaction in the skin to create new collagen fibres which helps to reduce pitted acne scarring and age concerns.

While the treatment may sound scary, it’s a non-invasive procedure with no downtime. The needles are tiny and the applicator has controls for specific depths for different areas of your face.

Does RF Needling work?

A study published by the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery found that over 70% of patients who were treated with RF Needling to address their acne scarring found an improvement on their overall skin texture. Similarly, RF Needling has proven to soften the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, especially those around the eye and on the upper lip.

“It’s natural for your skin to crease as you get older, as it loses elasticity. As a result, the development of the creases occurs,” says Dr Garry Cussell, Clinical Director of Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia. He explains that there are many factors which can accelerate the ageing process. These vary from stress, unhealthy diet, smoking and sun baking. With RF Needling, it’s easy to knock off a few years from your face. In our clinical practice, we also find it to be very effective for acne scarring.

The real benefit to RF Needling (compared to other Skin Tightening treatments) is that it can treat textural concerns at the same time as it delivers anti-aging benefits.

What should I expect from an RF Needling treatment?

Treatments can last 10-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.

The results will show a reduction in textured scarring, improvement in pore size and youthful, firmer skin in treated areas. Results can take 1-6 months to be noticeable however most people see a change after their 2nd or 3rd treatment.

There may be some discomfort during treatment, particularly on areas of the face where the skin is thinner. We apply a clinical strength numbing cream before treatment to alleviate discomfort.

There may be some redness or mild swelling for 1-2 days after treatment, but there shouldn’t be any soreness and you can return to your normal activities right away.

How do clinic treatments compare to at-home DIY RF Needling kits?

The idea of doing DIY RF Needling may sound appealing, especially if your finances are temporarily tightened. However, there are plenty of risks to doing it yourself at home instead of with a trained professional.

If you aren’t trained in the proper technique, you can leave your skin open to infections, dermatitis and the formation of scar tissue.

Not to mention, the at-home kits won’t have as many settings for the radiofrequency energy as the professional clinical equipment has, so you’re not likely to get as much of a result.
