Nail fungus laser treatment

Fotona Nail Fungus Treatment

Nail fungus develops when fungal organisms overpopulate the nail and surrounding tissue, causing discolouration, thickening and brittleness. Our Fotona Nd:YAG laser delivers controlled heat through the nail and into the nail bed and surrounding tissue to target fungal activity. Treatment may be performed on toenails or fingernails, depending on the area affected.

Nail fungus can affect toenails or fingernails and may present differently from person to person.

Discoloured nails

Nail fungus often first appears as yellow, white or brown discolouration within the nail. The Fotona Nd:YAG laser delivers controlled heat through the nail to target fungal activity in and around the nail bed.

Thickened or brittle nails

As fungal activity progresses, the nail may become thickened, brittle, rough or misshapen. Treating the affected nail and surrounding tissue supports the growth of a clearer nail over time.

Recurring or widespread infection

Fungal activity may extend beyond the visibly affected nail and can sometimes be present before obvious symptoms appear. For toenail treatment, all 10 toenails are treated during each session. Fingernails may also be treated where clinically appropriate.

Suitability, expected outcomes and the recommended treatment course are assessed during consultation. Individual results vary depending on the extent of fungal activity, nail growth rate and ongoing nail and foot care.

Laser Onychomycosis Treatment or Fotona Nail Fungus Laser.

Purpose

To target fungal activity in and around the nail bed as a straightforward, in-clinic treatment option.

How it works

Fotona Nd:YAG laser delivers controlled heat through the nail and into the nail bed and surrounding tissue to target fungal activity.

Treatment course

Four initial treatments are generally recommended, spaced approximately 1-4 weeks apart. A maintenance treatment is usually scheduled around three months after the fourth treatment.

What results look like

The laser targets fungal activity, but existing discolouration must grow out naturally with the nail rather than clearing immediately.

Treatment sensation

The laser creates repeated pulses of concentrated heat. Treatment can be uncomfortable or painful at times, although the sensation is brief and individual tolerance varies.

Treatment schedule

Repeated treatment helps address ongoing fungal activity.

Your treatment timing will be determined by your clinician. Initial appointments are generally scheduled 1-4 weeks apart, followed by a maintenance session approximately three months after the fourth treatment.

Treatments 1-4 Scheduled 1-4 weeks apart
Ongoing nail growth Keep feet and nails clean and dry
Maintenance Approximately three months after treatment four
Results timeline

Improvement appears as the nail grows.

Toenails grow slowly. A clearer nail generally becomes visible progressively as new nail replaces the previously affected area. Full results may take approximately 6-12 months to become visible.

Treatment course Laser targets fungal activity
New nail growth Gradual visible improvement
6-12 months Full nail growth may become visible
Before your appointment

Nails must be completely free of nail polish before every treatment.

Keep feet dry

Keep your nails and feet as dry as possible. Always dry your feet thoroughly after showering, bathing or swimming, including carefully drying between the toes.

Footwear and socks

Wear clean, breathable socks and allow footwear to dry fully between uses. Avoid leaving feet in damp socks or enclosed, moist footwear.

Suitability

Treatment should be performed by an experienced provider following an initial consultation.

Treatment sensation

Treatment involves concentrated heat and can be painful or uncomfortable. Your clinician will monitor the sensation throughout the procedure.

Results

Individual results vary depending on infection severity, nail growth rate, treatment attendance and ongoing foot and nail care.

Fotona Nail Fungus Treatment FAQs

Fotona nail fungus treatment uses our Nd:YAG laser to deliver controlled heat through the nail and into the nail bed and surrounding tissue, targeting the fungal activity associated with onychomycosis (nail fungus).

The laser is passed across the surface of each nail in a systematic pattern, with additional attention to the nail’s perimeter, since fungal infection can spread into the surrounding skin. The controlled heat is designed to target fungal organisms in the treated area.

Fungal activity can be present in a nail before it becomes visible. Treating all 10 toenails in every session helps address fungal activity that may not yet be showing symptoms, reducing the likelihood of it appearing in another nail later.

Most clients describe the sensation as a mild, gradual warming rather than pain. The treatment is generally well tolerated.

Approximately 20 minutes.

A minimum of 4 treatments is recommended for an effective course. Your clinician will confirm the right number of sessions for you at your consultation.

The laser targets the fungal activity, but it doesn’t remove the discolouration already in the nail – that needs to grow out. A toenail typically takes around 6 to 12 months to grow out fully, so full results become visible over that timeframe as new, unaffected nail grows through. Individual results may vary depending on the severity of the infection and how your nails respond.

No. There is no downtime associated with this treatment and you can return to your normal activities immediately afterwards.

Laser is a simple, no-fuss option: no cutting, no anaesthetic, no downtime, and generally no pain beyond a mild warming sensation – which makes it an easy first step for many clients. (Some clients also prefer to avoid oral antifungal medication, given the time commitment and liver monitoring some of these medications require, but that’s just one of several reasons clients choose laser.)

$450 per treatment. There is no package pricing – a minimum of 4 treatments is recommended, at $450 each.

Nails do not need to be filed or thinned before treatment. The only requirement is that nails are free of nail polish before your appointment.

Nail fungus treatment with our Fotona laser is available at both our Sydney CBD and Chatswood clinics.
