Skin Rejuvenation with RF Needling

RF Needling, or Radiofrequency Microneedling, is a cosmetic treatment that combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy to rejuvenate the skin. Tiny needles create micro-injuries in the skin, while RF energy is delivered deep into the dermis. This stimulates collagen and elastin production, helping to reduce wrinkles, scars, and improve skin texture.

What is RF Needling?

RF Needling, also known as RF microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling, is a skin treatment that combines microneedling with controlled radiofrequency (RF) energy.

During treatment, fine needles create controlled microchannels in the skin while delivering RF energy at selected depths below the surface. The combination of these two processes stimulates the skin’s natural repair response and supports the production and remodelling of collagen and elastin.

Unlike traditional microneedling, which relies on the mechanical action of the needles, RF Needling also delivers controlled heat within the targeted tissue. This allows the treatment to work at different depths and may help improve skin firmness, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture and certain types of acne scarring.

At Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia, treatment settings such as needle depth and RF energy can be adjusted according to the area being treated, your skin characteristics and the concerns being addressed. This allows your clinician to tailor the treatment rather than using the same approach for every patient.

Treatment concerns

What can RF Needling help improve?

RF Needling can be used to address a range of concerns relating to skin firmness, texture and overall skin quality. By combining microneedling with controlled radiofrequency energy, the treatment supports collagen and elastin remodelling at targeted depths within the skin.

Skin laxity & loss of firmness

By supporting collagen remodelling within deeper layers of the skin, RF Needling may help improve mild skin laxity and create a firmer, more supported appearance.

Fine lines & wrinkles

RF Needling can be used in areas where changes in collagen and skin quality have contributed to the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Acne scarring

RF Needling may help improve certain types of acne scars by encouraging skin remodelling and supporting new collagen formation. Suitability depends on the type and severity of scarring.

Uneven skin texture

The combined action of microneedling and radiofrequency energy may help improve rough or uneven texture and support smoother-looking skin.

Enlarged pores

Improvements in skin structure and collagen support may help reduce the visible appearance of enlarged pores.

Overall skin quality

RF Needling may form part of a broader skin rejuvenation plan where the goal is to improve firmness, texture and the overall appearance of the skin.

Not every concern requires the same treatment approach. Your clinician will assess your skin, treatment goals and suitability before recommending whether RF Needling or another treatment option is most appropriate.
How the treatment works

How does RF Needling work?

RF Needling combines the mechanical action of microneedling with controlled radiofrequency energy to create a targeted response within the skin.

Fine needles are introduced into the skin at selected depths, creating controlled microchannels. Radiofrequency energy is then delivered through the needles into the targeted tissue, generating controlled heat below the skin's surface.

A treatment that can be tailored to your skin

Needle depth and radiofrequency energy can be adjusted according to the treatment area, your skin characteristics and the concerns being addressed. This allows your clinician to tailor the treatment rather than using the same settings for every patient.

Controlled microneedling

Fine needles create controlled microchannels at selected depths within the skin. This mechanical action initiates the skin's natural repair response.

Radiofrequency energy

RF energy is delivered through the needles into the targeted tissue, creating controlled heat beneath the surface while limiting unnecessary heating of the outermost layer of skin.

Collagen & elastin remodelling

The combined mechanical and thermal response supports the production and remodelling of collagen and elastin over time, which may help improve firmness, texture and overall skin quality.

Treatment comparison

RF Needling vs traditional microneedling

Both treatments use microneedles to create a controlled response within the skin, but RF Needling also delivers radiofrequency energy into targeted tissue. This changes how the treatment works and the types of concerns it may be used to address.

Feature Traditional microneedling RF Needling
Microneedles Yes Yes
Radiofrequency energy No Yes
Collagen stimulation Yes Yes
Controlled thermal energy within tissue No Yes
Common treatment focus Skin texture, enlarged pores and general skin quality Skin texture, certain types of scarring, firmness and mild skin laxity
Typical downtime Generally lower Generally greater, depending on treatment depth, settings and individual response

More intensive does not always mean more appropriate

RF Needling is not automatically a better choice than traditional microneedling. Standard microneedling may be more appropriate for some concerns where the focus is primarily on surface texture, pores or general skin quality. RF Needling may be considered where deeper tissue remodelling, skin firmness or certain types of scarring are a greater priority. Your clinician can assess your skin and recommend the treatment approach most suited to your concerns and goals.

Treatment areas

What areas can be treated with RF Needling?

RF Needling can be used on the face and selected areas of the body, with treatment depth and radiofrequency settings adjusted according to the area being treated and the concern being addressed.

It may be used where the goal is to improve skin firmness and texture, or to address concerns such as enlarged pores, acne scarring, surgical scars, fine lines, wrinkles or stretch marks.

Treatment is tailored to the area

Different areas of the face and body have different skin thicknesses and treatment requirements. Your clinician will assess the area being treated and select appropriate needle depths and RF energy settings as part of your personalised treatment plan.

Face

RF Needling may be used across selected areas of the face to address skin firmness, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven texture and scarring.

Cheeks & jawline

These areas may be treated where concerns include texture, acne scarring, enlarged pores or mild loss of firmness.

Neck

RF Needling may be used on the neck where the treatment goal is to improve skin quality, texture and mild laxity.

Areas of scarring

RF Needling may be considered for certain acne scars and surgical scars, depending on the type, depth and location of the scar.

Stretch marks

Selected areas affected by stretch marks may be treated where collagen remodelling and improvement in skin texture are the treatment goals.

Selected body areas

RF Needling can also be used on selected body areas where concerns include skin texture, scarring, stretch marks or loss of firmness.

Treatment suitability

Who may be suitable for RF Needling?

RF Needling may be considered for people concerned about early skin laxity, acne scarring, enlarged pores, fine lines or uneven skin texture who are looking for a treatment that works below the skin's surface to support collagen remodelling.

Mild skin laxity or loss of firmness
Fine lines and wrinkles
Acne scarring or selected other scars
Enlarged pores
Uneven or rough skin texture
Overall skin quality and firmness concerns

Suitability is assessed individually

RF Needling is not necessarily the most appropriate treatment for every skin concern. Your clinician will assess your skin, medical history, treatment goals and other relevant factors before recommending whether RF Needling, traditional microneedling or another skin treatment is more appropriate for you.

Your treatment journey

What happens during RF Needling treatment?

Your RF Needling treatment is planned according to your skin, the area being treated and the concerns you would like to address. While individual treatment plans vary, the process will generally involve the following steps.

Consultation & assessment

Before treatment, your clinician will discuss your concerns and treatment goals, review relevant medical history and assess your skin and the area to be treated. This helps determine whether RF Needling is appropriate and allows the treatment plan to be tailored to you.

Treatment preparation

The treatment area is cleansed and prepared. A topical numbing cream may be applied where appropriate to help manage treatment sensation before RF Needling begins.

RF Needling treatment

The RF Needling handpiece is passed systematically across the treatment area. Fine needles enter the skin at selected depths while radiofrequency energy is delivered into targeted tissue. Needle depth and RF settings are selected according to your treatment plan, skin characteristics and the area being treated.

Immediately afterwards

Your skin may appear red and feel warm, sensitive or mildly swollen after treatment. The degree of redness and swelling can vary depending on the treatment area, settings used and your individual response.

Aftercare

Before you leave the clinic, your clinician will provide aftercare instructions relevant to your treatment. These may include guidance on skincare, sun protection and when to resume particular products or activities.

How long does RF Needling take?

Treatment itself typically takes approximately 10–45 minutes, depending on the size and number of areas being treated. Additional time may be required for consultation, preparation and topical numbing where appropriate.

```
Comfort & recovery
What does RF Needling feel like and what is the downtime?
Treatment sensation and recovery vary depending on the area being treated, the settings used and your individual skin response. Your clinician will discuss what you can reasonably expect as part of your treatment plan.
Treatment sensation
Does RF Needling hurt?
RF Needling is generally experienced as a combination of needling, pressure and warmth as the handpiece moves across the treatment area.
A topical numbing cream is typically used where appropriate to help manage discomfort. Sensation can vary between treatment areas and according to the depth and energy settings selected.
Downtime
What is the downtime?
Redness, mild swelling, warmth and sensitivity are common immediately after RF Needling. These effects often settle progressively over the following day or days.
The amount of downtime can vary depending on the intensity of treatment, the area treated and your individual response. More intensive settings may result in a longer visible recovery period.
Recovery
What should I expect afterwards?
Your skin may initially appear pink or red and can feel warm, tight or mildly tender. Some people may also experience temporary swelling or small visible marks from the microneedles.
These responses are part of the skin's reaction to treatment and generally reduce as recovery progresses. Your clinician will explain what is expected for your particular treatment.
Recovery varies from person to person
While RF Needling is commonly associated with relatively short downtime, it is important not to assume that every patient will look or feel completely recovered within 24 hours. Treatment depth, RF energy, the area treated and individual skin response can all influence recovery.
After your treatment
RF Needling aftercare
Following RF Needling, your skin is temporarily more sensitive while the treatment response begins. Appropriate aftercare can help support recovery and protect the treated skin during this period.
What to do after treatment
Follow your clinician's skincare instructions
Use the products and skincare routine recommended for you following treatment, particularly while the skin is sensitive.
Keep the skin protected from the sun
Minimise unnecessary sun exposure and follow your clinician's advice regarding appropriate sun protection after treatment.
Treat the skin gently
Avoid rubbing, picking or unnecessarily touching the treated area while redness, sensitivity or swelling is present.
Allow time for recovery
Temporary redness, warmth, swelling or sensitivity can occur. Give the skin time to settle and contact the clinic if you have concerns about your recovery.
What to temporarily avoid
Harsh or active skincare
Avoid reintroducing exfoliating acids, retinoids or other potentially irritating active products until advised that your skin is ready.
Excessive heat
Your clinician may recommend temporarily avoiding activities that expose the treated skin to significant heat while it is recovering.
Strenuous activity immediately afterwards
Depending on your treatment, you may be advised to avoid strenuous exercise for a short period where heat and perspiration could aggravate sensitive skin.
Other treatments on the area
Check with your clinician before having additional facial, laser, skin or cosmetic treatments while the treated area is recovering.
Your aftercare instructions may differ
Aftercare can vary according to the area treated, treatment intensity, your skin and any other treatments or skincare products you use. Your clinician will provide individual instructions before you leave the clinic, including when to resume your usual skincare and activities.
Treatments & results
How many RF Needling treatments will I need?
The number of RF Needling treatments you may need depends on the concern being treated, its severity, the treatment area, the settings used and how your skin responds over time.
Your treatment course
RF Needling is commonly performed as a course of treatments rather than as a single session. RCA typically recommends treatments at approximately 2–4 week intervals, with the number of sessions determined by your clinician according to your skin and treatment goals.
When will I see results?
RF Needling creates a controlled response within the skin, but changes associated with collagen production and remodelling occur gradually. Your skin may look temporarily red or swollen immediately after treatment, but this should not be confused with the longer-term treatment result.
After treatment Temporary redness, warmth or swelling may be visible while the skin begins to recover.
After 2–3 treatments Some patients begin to notice changes in texture, pore appearance, scarring or firmness.
1–6 months Changes may continue to develop as collagen remodelling progresses.
Maintenance treatments
Depending on your skin, treatment goals and response, your clinician may recommend maintenance treatments approximately every 6–12 months to support your ongoing treatment plan.
Results vary between individuals. The degree and timing of improvement depend on factors including your skin characteristics, the concern being treated, treatment intensity and the course recommended by your clinician.
Specific concerns
RF Needling for acne scars and skin tightening
RF Needling may be considered for several different skin concerns, but the treatment approach depends on what is being treated. Two common reasons people explore RF Needling are acne scarring and changes in skin firmness.
RF Needling for acne scars
RF Needling may be considered for certain types of acne scarring because the combination of microneedling and radiofrequency energy creates a controlled response within the skin and supports collagen remodelling at selected depths.
This can be useful where acne scars have altered the texture or structure of the skin. Treatment depth and RF settings can be adjusted according to the area being treated and the characteristics of the scarring.
Acne scars are not all the same
Different scar types can respond differently to treatment. RF Needling may form only one part of an acne scar treatment plan, and other technologies or treatment approaches may be more appropriate depending on the type, depth and distribution of the scars.
Learn more about acne & acne scarring
RF Needling for skin tightening
RF Needling may also be used where the treatment goal is to improve mild skin laxity, firmness and overall skin quality. Radiofrequency energy is delivered below the skin's surface while the microneedling component creates a controlled repair response.
Over time, the resulting collagen and elastin remodelling may help strengthen the skin and improve the appearance of mild loss of firmness.
Skin tightening treatments work in different ways
RF Needling is not interchangeable with every skin-tightening technology. Treatments such as HIFU, Ultraformer, Ultherapy, Fotona and other approaches target tissue differently and may be selected according to skin characteristics, anatomy and treatment goals.
Explore skin tightening treatments
The concern should determine the treatment plan
Rather than selecting a treatment based on the device alone, your clinician can assess the underlying concern and recommend the treatment or combination of treatments that may be most appropriate for your skin, anatomy and goals.
Comparing treatment options
How does RF Needling compare with other treatments?
RF Needling, HIFU and laser resurfacing can all be used within skin rejuvenation and tightening treatment plans, but they work in different ways and are selected for different concerns. The most appropriate option depends on your skin, anatomy and treatment goals.
RF Needling vs HIFU & Ultraformer
RF Needling and HIFU can both be considered where skin firmness is a concern, but the technologies target tissue differently and are not interchangeable.
RF Needling
Uses fine needles combined with radiofrequency energy to create controlled treatment at selected depths within the skin.
Common focus
Skin texture, enlarged pores, certain types of scarring, skin quality and mild loss of firmness.
HIFU / Ultraformer
Uses focused ultrasound energy without needles to target deeper tissue layers beneath the skin.
Common focus
Deeper tissue support and skin tightening where laxity and changes in facial or body contours are a greater priority.
Is RF Needling better than HIFU?
Neither treatment is universally better. RF Needling may be more relevant where texture, scarring and skin quality are important concerns, while HIFU may be considered where deeper tissue tightening is the primary objective. In some treatment plans, different technologies may also be used for complementary purposes.
Learn more about Ultraformer & HIFU
RF Needling vs laser resurfacing
RF Needling and laser resurfacing both stimulate a controlled skin response, but they use different forms of energy and may be selected for different combinations of skin concerns.
RF Needling
Combines microneedling with radiofrequency energy delivered beneath the skin's surface.
Common focus
Firmness, texture, enlarged pores and certain types of acne or other scarring.
Laser resurfacing
Uses laser energy to target the skin at selected depths, with the treatment approach varying according to the laser technology used.
Common focus
Depending on the laser, resurfacing may be considered for texture, scarring, sun damage, pigmentation, fine lines or more intensive skin renewal.
Which type of resurfacing is right for me?
Treatments such as Fraxel, CO2 and Erbium laser resurfacing differ in treatment depth, intensity, recovery and the concerns they are designed to address. RF Needling may be one option within a broader treatment plan rather than a direct substitute for every resurfacing treatment.
Explore laser skin treatments
Different concerns may require different technologies
Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia offers a range of technologies for skin tightening, scarring, texture and resurfacing. This allows your clinician to assess the concern first and recommend a treatment approach based on your skin and goals rather than assuming that one technology is appropriate for everyone.
RF Needling FAQ's
RF Needling, also known as RF microneedling or radiofrequency microneedling, combines fine microneedles with controlled radiofrequency energy. The needles create controlled microchannels in the skin while RF energy is delivered at selected depths below the surface, supporting collagen and elastin remodelling over time.
Radio frequency needling uses micro needles to deliver radio frequency energy (heat) directly into various depths in the skin causing a controlled wound response. This creates a chain reaction in the skin to create new collagen fibres which helps to reduce pitted acne scarring and age concerns.
RF Needling may be used to address concerns including mild skin laxity, fine lines, enlarged pores, uneven skin texture, acne scarring, selected other scars and overall skin quality. The treatment approach depends on the concern being treated and your individual skin characteristics.
The procedure involves 6 or more treatments over the course of 2-4 week intervals, depending on the skin type/concern.
Treatments can last 10-45 minutes, depending on the size of the area being treated.
The results will show reduction in textured scarring, improvement in pore size and firmer skin in treated areas. Results can take 1-6 months to be noticeable however most people see a change after their 2nd or 3rd treatment.
The length of results will vary person to person. As we age, naturally our skin loses laxity so with this loss of laxity, the appearance of scarring and pore size can (but not always) start to become slightly visible again.
Yes, maintenance treatments are suggested every 6-12 months to ensure the longevity of results from the treatment plan.
No. Both treatments use microneedles, but RF Needling also delivers radiofrequency energy into the targeted tissue. Traditional microneedling may be more appropriate where the focus is primarily on surface texture, pores or general skin quality, while RF Needling may be considered where deeper tissue remodelling, firmness or certain types of scarring are a greater priority.
Treatment sensation varies between individuals and treatment areas. RF Needling is commonly experienced as a combination of needling, pressure and warmth. A topical numbing cream is typically used where appropriate to help manage discomfort.
Growth factor injections is a fantastic treatment to combine with RF needling as they both complement each other; By having RF needling prior to having Growth factor injections, it creates tiny microscopic holes in the skin so that the growth factors can penetrate the skin deeper.
By having growth factor injections combined with RF needling, you will experience better and faster results. The growth factors is working on strengthening your skin structure whilst the RF needling is working to heat and contract the elastin fibres to improve texture. Results will last much longer as the skin will be strong and youthful.
Changes associated with collagen production and remodelling develop gradually. Some patients may begin to notice changes in texture, pore appearance, scarring or firmness after 2–3 treatments, with further changes potentially developing over approximately 1–6 months. Results and timing vary between individuals.
The duration of results varies according to your skin, the concern being treated, your treatment course and other factors that affect the skin over time. Depending on your treatment goals and response, your clinician may recommend maintenance treatments approximately every 6–12 months.
RF Needling may be considered for certain types of acne scarring because it supports collagen remodelling at selected depths within the skin. However, acne scars are not all the same. Scar type, depth and distribution influence which treatment is most appropriate, and RF Needling may form only one part of a broader acne scar treatment plan.
RF Needling may help improve mild skin laxity and firmness by supporting collagen and elastin remodelling. It is not, however, interchangeable with every skin-tightening treatment. Other technologies may be more appropriate where deeper tissue tightening or different anatomical concerns are the priority.
Neither treatment is universally better. RF Needling combines microneedling and radiofrequency energy and may be particularly relevant where skin quality, texture, scarring and firmness are concerns. HIFU technologies such as Ultraformer use focused ultrasound without needles and target deeper tissue layers. The appropriate treatment depends on your anatomy, skin characteristics and goals.
RF Needling and laser resurfacing work through different mechanisms, so one is not automatically better than the other. Depending on the concern, treatments such as Fraxel, CO2 or Erbium laser resurfacing may be considered for different degrees of texture change, scarring, pigmentation, sun damage or skin renewal. Your clinician can assess which approach is most appropriate.
RF Needling can be used on the face and selected areas of the body. Common treatment areas may include the cheeks, jawline, neck, areas of acne or surgical scarring, stretch marks and selected body areas. Suitability and settings are determined according to the area and concern.
The RF needling works at the same depths than what your typical “resurfacing” lasers can go, without any downtime. Prior to having RF needling technology, the only options available for scarring and pore refinement were laser treatments that had 3-7 days’ downtime, which would require 6-8 weeks in between treatments. The other benefit of RF needling is the ability to adjust the depth of the needle tips throughout the treatment, it is important to focus deep & superficially to maximise results.
Skin must be prepped on a pigment inhibiting product 2-4 weeks prior to starting. Sun protection must be worn at all times, even if not in direct sun exposure
You may have some redness for about 24 hours after treatment. Some of the treated areas might have a little bit of minor swelling, which also normally resolves the next day.
Anybody who is prone to keloid scarring or on certain medications cannot be treated.
RF Needling treatments at RCA start from $450.
A course of three treatments starts from $1,215, representing a 10% package saving, while a course of six treatments starts from $2,295, representing a 15% package saving.
The final cost depends on the treatment area and the treatment plan recommended following consultation.
Yes. A consultation allows your clinician to assess your skin, relevant medical history, concerns and treatment goals before determining whether RF Needling is suitable. They can also explain the recommended treatment course, expected recovery and applicable pricing.
Yes. Consultations at Rejuvenation Clinics of Australia are complimentary.
